During the forum activists showed their interest in a number of round-table discussions, one of which was named ‘EU in the world.’
On development, Laura Sullivan said that aid must be “genuine” and “effective.” EU aid policy must take into account the positions of NGOs and trade unions. Also on the subject of development, Emmanuel Drouin expressed the urgent need for a European policy on Africa in order for development to be socially just and democratic.

Nous sommes embourbés dans quelques pays du Tiers-monde : Afghanistan, Irak, Kosovo, où nous déployons le maximum de nos capacités déportables sans succès.
Imaginez un instant que la dictature chinoise paranoiaque, qui n'est pas en voie de démocratisation par l'économie, mais ressemble plutot à un virus mutant, aie une poussée de fièvre militariste, contre Taiwan tout d'abord, puis contre le Vietnam, la Corée et le Japon, sans parler de ses rivalités avec l'Inde. Que serions nous en mesure de faire ?
Je rappelle que la Chine nous tient en nous jouant les uns contre les autres dans la compétition économique, qu'elle a acheté les meilleurs sous-marins soviétiques, qu'elle peut faire exploser en vol nos satellites espions, qu'elle a 3 millions d'hommes sous les drapeaux complètement fanatisés, que sa population est nationaliste car ignorante des enjeux internationaux, donc prête à une longue et dure guerre. Et nous ?
Pour moi, la nouvelle doctrine anti-dictature devrait englober une vaste alliance OTAN_bis:USA+Europe_PESD+Russie, alliée à l'Inde, au Japon et à la Corée du Sud. Il y a urgence à ne pas s'endormir sur nos lauriers, et à décripter le véritable langage de rapport de force de la dictature chinoise.

The first plenary
debate, right after the opening of the PES Council, was dedicated to
international politics. The debate entitled "The EU on the
international scene; Promoting sustainable peace’" was chaired by
the Katrin Saks, Member of the European Parliament from Estonia,
and was filled with lively interventions and contributions.
"It’s an important challenge for us as socialists and social
democrats to apply our values in the 21st century," said Espen
Barth Eide, Secretary of State for Defense in Norway, when he
presented a recent report by the PES on the international scene
and sustainable peace.
According to him effective multilateralism is a fundamental tool
and has to be focused on the creation of other instruments for
changes. The main objective of socialists and social democrats
should be to bring the advantages of an interdependent world to
citizens in many different parts of the world. For example
through the European Security Defense Policy, or via humanitarian
aid and health policies, trade policy or external relations with
countries such as China and India.
