An important part of PES activists Romania proposal for the Manifesto2009 is given to the Roma community issues. This theme is considered an important social issue by the Romanian social democrats and this is why our MEPs are supporting several solutions included in our manifesto proposal like:

- the creation of the European Agency for Roma

- education projects for the Roma community

- promotion of the Roma culture as an European culture (the Roma community is not only a Eastern European issue but an European issue)

- self-inclusion projects for the Roma community to give them access through jobs to social development

- information campaigns all over Europe about this culture and community

Our purpose is to increase awareness regarding the fact that this community is a European community that is facing a high degree of exclusion all over Europe (increasingly in countries where they tend to immigrate) and low social development. Let’s stop with all the discrimination and build an Europe equal for everyone.

1. Yes, definitely par rikkeindenmark Devenir militant(e) du PSE le vendredi 4 juillet 2008 à 17h04

I completely agree , Victor - we really need to deal with the Roma issue! I think your last bullet - informing people in Europe about the Romas and their culture - is very, very important. I've lived in several European cities and have met Roma - and prejudices against Roma - in all of them.  People need to be better informed to truly understand the problems that Romas face.

See you in Vienna!

2. The Spanish experience par capelo Devenir militant(e) du PSE le samedi 5 juillet 2008 à 00h41

I completely agree that Roma people need to be supported by the european institutions, primarily those of Rumania. Let me propose you the experience and effort that spanish people have done (both romani and not romani - gitanos y payos we say) during the last three decades. Although the problem of marginalization is not completely resolved for everyone, from around 600.000 spanish gypsies, more than 60% live in their own houses, mixed with the rest of spaniards. Moreover, we all acknowledge and admire their important contribution to the spanish music, dance and culture.
