It’s been 100 years since the women of the New York textile factory went on strike to demand better working conditions and the right to vote. A whole century had passed since that event. Today we live in a world where nobody is surprised to see women on the elections lists. But when news came out that a 25-year-old woman saved an airplane at the Hamburg airport during the Emma hurricane, there was disagreement as to what consisted bigger news – that she was young or that she was a woman? The interviews with famous women – politicians, chairpersons, directors – often include a question: how do you manage to reconcile your work with the role of the mother and wife. Does one ask a man how he reconciles his professional and family functions?

Today women have a right to vote (although still not everywhere in the world), study, work in different professions because many decades ago the most courageous of them challenged the status quo. Of course they suffered from contempt but today their rights are an obvious thing.

We, European Socialists, have to fight against further stereotypes in the perception of women and fight for changes not only in the law but also in people’s minds. We must do that to create tools to help women reconcile the professional career with family life. So that no one would be surprised when a woman saves an airplane.

1. Good point, Elwira par Asynjen Devenir militant(e) du PSE le jeudi 20 mars 2008 à 10h34

Hi Elwira, you are very right! We need to leave all the stereotypes behind (both the female and male ones)! It makes me wonder what women candidates for the European elections can do: should they refuse to answer questions about their family life - or? What can they do to escape the stereotypes?

2. No Group of Individuals Should be Stereo-Typed par Duncan Anderson Devenir militant(e) du PSE le jeudi 20 mars 2008 à 15h34

We should be concerned about the stereo-typing of all groups of individuals. There are lots of groups that are under represented across the whole of European society. Education is one way of solving part of the problem. But with regards to business, I wonder if the current business model that is used across Europe is male dominated because most business have been dominated by males for so long they have altered things to suit themselves.
So it is worthwhile looking at another business model, that of Co-Operatives. I don't mean the workers co-operatives of USSR, but the types of Co-Operative recognised by the Co-Operative Movement. These businesses flourish, are a benefit to society, are a benefit to the environment, are a benefit to their local community and as their employees and customers and members of the Co-Operative there is no discrimination. There is nothing second rate about Co-operatives and they should be considered second rate.
PES should be promoting Co-Operatives.
Incidentally, when Tony Blair was asked how he juggled family life and work he said he went out of his way to make sure he spent at least an hour of quality time with his family. So blokes can get asked about reconciling work and family.

3. stop stereo types par kim Devenir militant(e) du PSE le mercredi 9 avril 2008 à 14h09

Duncan is wright nobody should be stereo typed. We live in the 21the centery where equelty for all, and al humans are the same ( with same rights and duty's) should be a normal thought.

There are a lot of things that keep stereotype a live and one of these is the media and off course education. We can do something about the education. But doing something about stereotyping in the media is more difficult. There should come some norms how media should adress women and other groups.

If something is happens and a women, young person,... is involved they will always adres this. "A young men, Or a women did ...". This can't happen. Why does the media have te tress the age or nationality of a person ? There should come rules about this.
