On Friday, March 7, 2008, Simon Hughes, lides of the Liberals in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, said that homosexuals can return to Iran and avoid persecution being "discreet". Leaving aside the obvious discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation shows that, increasingly, the conservatives Europeans, and particularly British, it is clear that the lack of common legislation within the European Union over the right of asylum and the reasons on which the request for asylum or can not be rejected, opens a ban on certain groups that is not permissible at the European level.

The fictitious problem about immigration, we must remember that Europe needs 20 million immigrants over the next 20 years, is making the most demagogic take Conservatives that is still attempting to convince voters Europeans on the need to tighten the legal measures that provide the right of asylum. But these legal measures may not contradict the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Charter on Human Rights, regardless of whether the right of asylum is taken for reasons of political persecution or sexual orientation. The right to not be discriminated against or persecuted for reasons of thought is not superior to the right of anybody to have sexual orientation that prefer.

The Socialists face the same conservative speech from all countries of the Union with regard to immigration and the right to asylum. A discourse that is not new and which seeks to achieve sufficient fear on the part of Europeans to achieve electoral returns. The Europeans are not idiots. That speech must be fought with reality. Zapatero has demonstrated to all Spaniards that the reality is not the one that painted the Spanish Popular Party, has shown that immigrants bring cultural richness, economic and labour. Spain is today the most multicultural country of all Europe, and the practical demonstration that integration is possible.

The Spanish example, after having overcome the criticism concerned and without any foundation raised after the last regularization of immigrants, agreed with unions and companies, shows that integration is possible and necessary, and coexistence is only the product of the same. The failure of the French model of integration and the bad called "multicultural" Anglo-Saxon model shows that are outdated, worn out and lacking any credibility. We need to the European Union join criteria in terms of immigration and integration model as the only way to face the future, setting their goals in the models are proving to be effective, and makes it clear to the community partners can not ignore the rights human about immigration or about the right of asylum. And most importantly, it is necessary that the Union achieves demonstrate to the Europeans that this perception of danger on the safety and maintenance of public services, that has been extended so concerned by conservative groups and of the extreme right in Europe, is false.

Europeans Socialist and Labourist must face to the image of fear issued by the conservatives and the extreme right in Belgium, Holland, Germany, Spain, Poland, France, Denmark, Austria, Italy in one year. The discourse of the fear of difference, the use of fear as a way to capture the most depressed and less culture of the European countries is not anything new to us. But the truth is that whether it is still effective because it is something we are doing wrong in our respective countries of origin and the momentum needed from the Union's institutions to make that speech not impact among certain sectors of European society.

We expected a great job before the elections to the European Parliament. And that job involves demonstrating to citizens that multiculturalism, understood as enriching and peaceful coexistence of different cultures in common spaces, not bad called "multiculturalism" ghettos in big cities, works.

Sounds "Reason", Animal Culture.

Good night, and good luck...

When was it that multiculturalism became a negative word? In my home country a recent survey revealed that the majority of the population perceives multiculturalism to be negative. In my view the PES manifesto should describe multiculturalism as a positive development with benefits for the individual citizen.

The writer Timothy Garton Ash, The Guardian, was the one who first spoke of the use of the pejorative term multiculturalism by many politicians of the Anglo Saxon world. The reality is that the term enriches any civilization which holds as its own, is evident. When politicians Anglo Saxons, conservatives and the extreme right, use the term in reference to the cultures themselves are under attack by alien cultures. They refer to this term to the existence of nuclei in the big cities where persons of foreign origin live who not speak the language of their host country and did nothing to integrate. When the reality is that the host countries do not do anything to facilitate this integration. The Anglo Saxon model of ghettos for immigration.

I fully agree with you that the PES manifesto should include an explicit reference to multiculturalism as enrichment Europe. The European Union is one of the most multicultural areas of the world, it has been since the Phoenicians, Greeks and Persians traveled by the old world. And it is our job to ensure that respect, being a form of identity of the Union.

The PES manifesto should describe multiculturalism as a positive development with benefits for the individual citizen, because it is true.

3. Well said! par fairness Devenir militant(e) du PSE le vendredi 14 mars 2008 à 15h08

Europe's socialists should definetely insist that multiculturalism is a positive word. The right-wing rhetoric is not constructive and far from helpful for integration.
