This video has been going around the internet for a while. The idea is to consider how the world’s ‘goods’ would be distributed if we had a ‘miniature earth’ with only 100 people on the planet. It is really an interesting way of presenting problems such as poverty, AIDS and illiteracy.

Such a video makes you feel privileged - privileged to be a ‘rich’ European who doesn’t have to worry about lack of water or children dying of AIDS. At the same time it’s frustrating – frustrating to be reminded of how far we are away from social justice.

What should the EU do to ensure a more fair distribution of the world’s goods? Posing this question will not give me any points for originality, but it’s certainly essential to debate. Both on miniature and ‘real’ earth there is a long way to go before we can speak of social justice.

At the same time we should not forget that social injustice prospers in Europe as well. The obvious case is the huge gap between Western and Eastern Europe. And in many of the rich European countries the distance between rich and poor is increasing. This is definitely something Europe’s socialists and social democrats should focus on. We need to look at our own backyard too!

I call for an ambitious plan to ensure social justice – in Europe and beyond!

1. Setting the framework to become conscious actors... par pattheact Devenir militant(e) du PSE le mercredi 16 janvier 2008 à 17h36

Only three per cent of the population in this miniature world could have access to this video and if 0.2 per cent have a chance to watch it and to feel concerned about the lack of social justice, this brings me to the only conclusion that makes sense to me: If you'd like to see the world change for a better, start with your own life and set the example by doing, not only by sharing good intentions, but by becoming a concious actor of the small village our mother earth has become.
If politics can help you to become an actor of a more balanced world, then the values like internationalism, solidarity, fight against all discriminations, ecological awareness, a clear separation between the state and the religious communities etc., like those carried on by the socialist, social democrat and labour movements will certainly become more and more accurate and guiding in a society where individualism, nationalisms, religious fanatisms, the fear of all differences and the destroying of our nature have led to the very sad conclusion this short video is teaching us...
Fighting for and supporting the drawing of a first common manifesto for european elections like the one from the PES will certainly set a first benchmark in the fight for a New Social Europe and through this we will be able to act and to set a good example to follow, leaving the good intentions to the passive well intended people...

2. Huge problems - and 'war against terrorism' is the wrong approach par Julian from Schaerbeek le vendredi 18 janvier 2008 à 17h36

This is a good video but I dont think the key issue for the PES is to make individuals set a good example. Individual behavour is important and personally I buy fair trade, recycle as much as I can etc - but I do not think that political parties should paly a big role in telling individuals how to behave. What would be a more important role for the PES would be to reject the conservative focus on security and "war against terorism". The "war against terrorism" is a totally one-sided approach to the world's problems. Yes there are security and terrorism problems to tackle, but tackling climate change; delivering basic needs like food, housing, jobs, education and health; implementing basic rights such as the right to vote and the right to join a trade union are every bit as important. The PES should lead the EU into taking a much more active and constructive, peaceful role in the world.
