The PES manifesto consultation has ended but our dialogue on 'Yourspace' goes on! We will continue to debate the hot issues that will shape the 2009 European elections - migration, climate change, rising food and energy prices, jobs, equality, the EU treaty - as well as getting ready for the elections and keeping you informed about the preparation of the PES manifesto.

Today, the European Parliament Declarationon combating trafficking of children was presented to the press and the public by its promoters, socialist MEPs Maryusa Lyubcheva and Zita Gurmai, with the support of other MEPs and representatives of NGOs, such as Terre des Hommes, Care for Europe.

Despite the fact it is a cross border problem involving developing countries as well as developed ones, this is the first time that a document on trafficking in children has been adopted at the European level.

This event was on opportunity to publicize the demand of the declaration for a closer cooperation between Member States and EU bodies against this tragic trade.

But the declaration will not remain just a piece of paper! MEP Lyubcheva announced several steps being taken to advance the course.

First of all, the declaration shall be presented to the European Commission with the support of all parliamentary groups. Then lobby actions, such as hearings, meetings and seminars will be organised to discuss policy initiatives in this area.

The next step is already planned: the EU anti trafficking day - Trafficking in Human Beings: Time for Action, will be held in Brussels on October the 18th!

The collective vaMos has just sent us this post.

vaMos means (in French) Mixed Organized and United Antimasculinist Vigilance: a collective spontaneously created in reaction to the international congress “Paroles d’hommes”, which gathers several “masculinists” in Brussels.

If vaMos gets mobilized, it is because those defenders of “moral order” fight against all social progress we gained through different movements and in particular the fights of the feminists.

Their neoliberal attacks threaten our current social benefits, such as financial independence, public services, sexual and reproductive rights and so on, that’s why vaMos proposes two events:

    - Friday 17 October, at 7pm, we invite you to a political café on “Masculinism: the opposite to feminism?”, @ Maison des femmes (29, rue blanche, 1060 Bruxelles).

    - Saturday 18 October, from 3.30pm, let your imagination explode for the festive and peaceful gathering, @ the corner of rue du poinçon and rue de l’étuve (1000 Bruxelles).

Come and join the feminist collective vaMos at two activist events on October 17 and 18 in Brussels!

We face economic challenges not seen for generations.

This is the time when we must state the case for socialism.

We have a clear decision. We can stand by, and leave the public to pick up the pieces afterwards, in what could be the worst recession since the 1930s.

Or we provide a clear alternative. And here are 5 points for discussion:

     - establishment of fixed exchange rates with any fluctuations subject to 95% Tobin tax

     - a massive public works program based on harnessing renewable energy sources and transport, bringing existing African-based solar projects forward

    - all bank interest rates determined by the ECB or national bank

    - bank statutes to contain elected representation and to represent all stakeholders

    - immediate implementation of emergency anti-poverty programmes across the EU, including social enterprise and community projects, with emphasis on the young and the elderly

and I'm sure we can think of more...

Are you between 16 and 35 years old? Are you committed in exploring new paths on future EU challenges? So join the debate and give your contribution in building “The Young Socialist Dream”, the motto for a series of conferences that the Socialist Group in the European Parliament is going to hold in Brussels.

This is the place where you can share your concerns and hopes on EU policies with Socialist MEPs, and to point out your criticism and ideas on how to bring EU politics closer to you and your generation’s aspirations by braking away from political and academic analysis and to give open, taboo-free direct dialogue.

Four sessions will be hold between December 2008 and March 2009: Intercultural Dialogue, Globalisation and climate change, Social Europe, Peace in the World. Each of them will be followed by a cultural event in the evening.

The first will take place on the afternoon of December the 10th and the morning of December the 11th. Migration and interculturality are the focus of the first conference, with priority given to young people coming from Southern Europe, in particular from all those regions which are directly affected by integration problems.

Coming week will be show again one significant step in international politics and especially in Western Balkans. 1st at its plenary session called for 8th October, the 192-member UN General Assembly is to debate Serbia’s draft resolution calling for an advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice on Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence. 2nd EU tries again find some common position about Kosovo case and the forecast is that EU member-states will probably abstain from the vote at the UN. 3rd Portugal, Macedonia (FYR) and Montenegro are under huge pressure to recognize Kosovo independence.

    UDI and ICJ in UN

Serbia has filed a draft resolution in which it asks from the UN General Assembly to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on the legality of the unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) of Kosovo. Belgrade has proclaimed two objectives with this initiative. The first, immediate goal is to have the ICJ provide its stand on the UDI and to stop the recognition of Pristina’s act by UN members. The second, mid-term objective is to have Belgrade and Pristina go back to the negotiating table on the status question.

Last week a trial vote revealed 120 of the 192 members gave their backing to Serbia's request to refer the matter to the ICJ, reported the German daily Handelsblat.... » read more ...

Earlier this week Serbian President Boris Tadic stated, that he would not rule out partitioning Kosovo if all other options on Kosovo’s final status have been exhausted. "Intellectuals in Serbia and the international public are debating the issue of a partition and this is one of the options that have been emphasized all these years in searching for a solution to Kosovo's future status. I can only think about this when all other possibilities have been exhausted” Tadić told a news conference. (B92, 1/10/2008)

    Partition

Although Tadic did not specify where the line of partition would run, it is most likely to include the municipalities of Zvecan, Leposavic and Zubin Potok as well as the northern half of the flashpoint town of Mitrovica. This area in northern Kosovo is overwhelming ethnic Serb and Pristina’s influence holds little weight here.

However just half of the 100,000 Serbs living in Kosovo actually live in northern areas while the rest are in isolated enclaves that dot the former province. One should also remember that about 100,000 - 206,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Kosovo is living in Serbia.

» read more ...

First of all, I introduce myself: my name is Gianfranco, I am 20 and I study Classic Literature in Palermo, Sicily. I have been a member of the Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI) since last year, and I am also coordinator in my city, Bagheria, and member of the Federazione dei Giovani Socialisti.

The Italian Socialist Party, led by Riccardo Nencini, just organised a three days event “Socialistinfesta@Mondoperaio” in Vieste, in the South of Italy.

The PSI: its name is self-explanations, but it is good to underline that it is the only Italian political force which openly declare itself to be inspired by European Socialism’s progressive reformist values.

The title of the event “FUTURE PRESENT! The conflict of ideas” well summarises its theme. A moment for meeting all the forces and reformist spirits, not just the socialist ones, a step for starting building a new political platform able to guarantee to our Country a stable reformist government.

One of the most contentious issues now under debate is how to respond to the global financial crisis.

US Treasury announced a $700 billion rescue plan to remove some of the “bad” assets owned by banks which caused the collapse of the financial system, with the aim to sell off these mortgage-related debts in the future.

Under the US Treasury plan, also European banks with "significant operations in the US" will be eligible to sell or auction their bad debts to Treasury fund.

On the other hand, the European Central Bank (ECB) announced on Wednesday 24 September an additional injection of $40 billion of cash, in order to appease the markets and maintain the flow of cash between banks reluctant to lend each other funds.

Though the ECB welcomed the US rescue plan to enhance the stability of financial market, it ruled out the possibility of large-scale bail out operations such as the one of Fannie and Freddie, the mortgage investments enterprises, or the more recent one of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. The reason for rejecting such measures lies in the fact that the financial situation in Europe is not as much in trouble as in US and that the European central banks are considered responsible only for the... » read more ...

Socialists should listen more to genuine public concerns about the impact on public services of migration, UK Immigration Minister Liam Byrne told a fringe meeting at Labour Party conference in Manchester.

He argued that immigration was a fact of globalisation, and that Britain is richer as a result of migration – but that impacts on schools, hospitals and housing were real and that local and national Government must do more to anticipate and deal with these impacts.

Byrne outlined what the Labour Government was doing create a fair and progressive migration policy including independent assessment of the skills needed in the country, a points system for legal migration, a clampdown on illegal immigration (including illegal work and illegal employers), and better planning to anticipate impacts on services. He also said that more needed to be done about integration – especially language acquisition – and that employers would be expected to contribute to language training of migrant staff.

Marek Siwiec, Vice-President of the European Parliament and member of the Socialist Group in the EP has initiated an action "Good Bag".

Throughout his constituency in the Wielkopolska region Marek Siwiec's assistants and members of local bodies of Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) have been distributing eco bags of the PSE Group in the EP with attached letters of the MEP and leaflets with environmental tips.

Also, the inhabitants could take part in a survey and find out about their Carbon Footprint.

The action, very much liked by the inhabitants, will be conducted in 30 districts.
