Thanks to Jon Worth for his proposals to how Europe’s socialist
and social democratic parties can campaign together in the 2009
elections.
My dream would be to have five events during the election campaign
where people from different European cities go out on the street
and campaign at the same time. It would be amazing to see PES
activists in for example London, Paris and Budapest gather in front
of the local town hall at the exact same day time. Such events
would have great symbolic value.
On the content side I invite all PES activists and national parties
to come up with five great proposals for the PES manifesto. I call
these proposals flowers – we need five flowers that Europe’s
socialist and social democrat parties can use in their campaigns.
These should not be technical proposals, but progressive ideas that
people can relate to. I encourage all readers to use their
imagination and give the PES their suggestions for the five
flowers. Let us come up with 1000 flowers and select the best ones
for the PES manifesto.

I agree with
our PES activist when he writes that we need a
strong PES to counterweight global capitalism.
Last summer I presented, together with my colleague Ieke van den
Burg from the Socialist Group in the European Parliament,
a report on private equity and hedge funds.
In the last four years the financial market has grown 30 to 50
percent a year. Today it is no longer the real economy that
controls the financial market – it is the other way around! The
real economy is governed by nation states and the EU – but who
decides on the financial market? The answer is, unfortunately,
only a very few people behind closed doors. We in Europe made our
democratic political choice in 2000 – with the so-called Lisbon
goals – to safeguard the future of our welfare states with more
and better jobs and social cohesion. This democratic political
choice – made in the European Council – must be respected by all
– including the big guys dominating the financial markets.
We need to make the market behave, the same way we have made our
markets behave in our nation states and at the European...

First of all:
congratulations to the Spanish socialist party, PSOE, for winning the
national elections in Spain!
There are many reasons to why I have great respect for PSOE. The
party’s
recent proposal on how to fight brain drain is very
progressive. This idea is an inspiration for all Europe’s socialist
parties, and I hope it will also be considered by the European
Commissioner for Development.
When I see how many doctors and engineers migrate from developing
countries to the European Union it seems right to repay by
financing the education and training of new professionals in their
home countries. PSOE’s idea is a very pragmatic proposal and
definitely something which we should consider for our common PES
manifesto.

The suggestion to
focus more on environmental issues is certainly a good one. I
usually refer to it as a new strategy for ‘smart green growth’, but
‘New Sustainable Europe’ and ‘New Social Europe is also Green’ are
also catchy headlines. Thanks to our PES activist for his
ideas!
Smart green growth is already mentioned in the PES strategy for a
New Social Europe: we suggest ambitious
investments in research and in new energy forms. It’s about
millions of new jobs. The conservatives look at the costs here and
now, we look at the new opportunities for all: potentially millions
of new and better jobs. Europe’s socialists and social democrats
need to be proactive and consider how becoming greener can lead to
growth and new jobs – such a strategy is certainly something which
should be a central part of our manifesto for the 2009
elections.

I would really take
this point about decent conditions for migration and integration of
migrants as one of the most important ones for the
future work of the PES. With the Lisbon Treaty, European
cooperation on migration will be reinforced and at the next meeting
of the PES Presidency we will have a debate on
migration and integration.
From my view point decent conditions for migration is, right now,
one of the most significant human rights challenges within the
European Union. We often talk about ensuring decent working and
living conditions for EU citizens looking for jobs across EU
borders. But migrants from outside the EU are also a very
vulnerable group and we need to ensure decent conditions for their
arrival and stay. But it must be based on the same rights and
duties for all. This is the key to integration. This is key to
understanding and acceptance by ordinary people.

How can we spark a
greater interest in EU politics? Lolomodrego asked this question some time ago and it
is a good one.
In my opinion the answer is to make political choices more visible.
We need to give Europe’s citizens a clear choice between a red
Europe and a blue Europe. We should offer them an ‘aha experience’
and make it obvious to them that what goes on in the European
Parliament is similar to the political fight in national
parliaments: it is a choice between the Party of European
Socialists and Europe’s assorted conservatives, liberals and
extremists.
Another answer is that we need to make optimum use of the Internet
as a meeting place for progressives. Maybe we cannot afford to
travel and meet in real life, but we can meet and debate on the
Internet. Grassroots in the US are famous for their skilled use of
the Internet – if they can do it, we can do it! My plea to you is
this: go to Yourspace, let us meet here – and invite your
progressive friends. This way we can get together, debate and
mobilize for the upcoming elections.
