The big issues of the election by davidvaughan

Hi fairness, what issues are big depends on your point of view. But both the main candidates think congestion and transport is a big issue, and they're both interested in the related environmental problems. The Olympics is also a talking point - how it's funded, how it's organised, and policed. Finally, the affordability of housing concerns them both.

Boris Johnson talks about crime rates quite a lot, and says he'll reduce them. He also puts a little more emphasis on health, although it's not a big point of difference between them in my view.

Livingstone is interested in showy events that bring tourists in and make London famous. His manifesto is also slightly more biased to issues in the "culture war" - such as race and socialised services.

Here's Ken's manifesto: http://www.kenlivingstone.com/policies/culture_and_sport

Here's Boris's: http://www.backboris.com/policy/index.php

From my point of view, as a supporter of "clean" government and transparency, it will be impossible for me to vote for Livingstone since he has transferred so much money into obscure organisations and doesn't seem to be able to account for it. Members of his cabinet and advisers are under investigation for fraud. City Hall seems to be a den of thieves! (I can say that in a general sense, can't I? No names mentioned, but feel free to moderate this bit of my post if it's close to the bone).

Good government needs to be clean and transparent - this is a fundamental requirement for the making of good decisions which maximise benefit for all. If an administration tries to conceal its activities and its spending, it seems inevitable to me that the decisions it makes are unlikely to benefit people as well as they might.

Have a look at the map and look at the links between the French territory and the circle on the right, which represents the French Socialist supports abroad. You'll notice the links are thicker (i.e. stronger and deeper) between the circle and certain areas of France. What does this mean? As one of those bloggers living in the UK, my links were thicker to Marseille, Lyon and especially Paris because of the blogger friends I had who lived there. We fed of information and debate off each other, but more importantly shared this across the network, so insights about local campaigning "on the ground" in Paris could be taken in by local activists in London and vice versa.

With PES Activists, we are not just members of one national party but of an umbrella organisation of parties right across Europe, so insights about issues and policies in London is very relevant to Parisians, not only Socialist activists to learn tips, but everyday Parisians to work out what works or not. Maybe we could have the equivalent of a Segoland for the PES Activists? What would be even better is to combine the googlemaps function so that PES map doesn't only focus on online activity/blogs but also face-to-face activity.

In the meantime, I'm going back into the rain to campaign for Ken Livingstone, the most progressive and pro-European mayoral candidate for London...and then write up the synthesis of all the PES debates we organised. Here's the videos of the debate "Globalisation in the community, how can we build a social Europe" here http://manifesto2009.pes.org/en/new-social-europe/post/340

Vote for Ken, Vote for Peace!

Hi there,

I wouldn't want to sound too sarcastic, but to get the very first concrete proposals and contributions from our British comrades should be a signal, a strong signal for all the misbelievers. As the UK is not known to be the most enthusisatic of our european partners I find it a truly refreshing and motivating fact that the british Labour Party has set the best possible example of european collaboration, by sending in the first reflected contribution proposals for the PES Manifesto and this is really a very encourageing fact.

OTHER MEMBER PARTIES JUST NEED TO FOLLOW THE GOOD EXAMPLE TO MAKE THIS CONSULTATION A TRUE SUCCESS FOR EVERY EUROPEAN SOCIAL-DEMOCRAT!!!

Cheers,

Pattheact
