Europe's socialist parties are warming up for the 2009 election campaign

This week communication experts from Europe’s socialist and social democratic parties met in Brussels to debate the campaign for the 2009 European elections. 50 dedicated campaigners met to share ideas on how to campaign together as one political family.

The experts looked to already existing socialist campaigns to find inspiration: One is the recent campaign of the Spanish socialist party, PSOE, which featured many impressive videos and graphics. Leading up to the national elections they used the first letter of the party leaders name as a brand – ‘con Z de Zapatero’! Another inspiration was the ‘zero VAT on condoms’ campaign of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament. Here the campaigners made extensive use of Facebook – a social networking site – to spread their message.

Last, but definitely not least, the online campaign strategy of the French PS presidential candidate Ségolène Royal was discussed. The Internet was used very effectively during the campaign: Royal's website was extremely popular and more than 1.000 blogs took part in the campaign, clustered in a network called ‘Segoland’.

Meeting participants agreed that Europe’s socialists and social democrats can certainly learn a lot from each others campaigns. What do you think the PES campaign for the upcoming elections should look like? What can the PES learn from campaigns in your home country?

The illustration is a visual representation of 'Segoland' - the socialist blogosphere during the French presidential elections.

The Swedish social democrats discussed the future of EU when the Swedish Social Democratic Party met in the Swedish Parliament on March 7th. The keynote speakers were Mona Sahlin, party leader and chair of the PES group Save our planet, Margot Wallström, Vice-president of the EU Commission, Jan Eliasson, former Minister for foreign affairs, and Wanja Lundby-Wedin, President of the Swedish LO and ETUC. Around 250 persons attended the conference.

The topics of the conference were:

The future of EU with a new treaty

Work and justice in EU - are workers rights in the EU threatened by the Laval case?

Mona Sahlin underlined that the same ideological differences we have in Sweden also exist in the EU. Therefore it matters if we are many who share the social democratic vision. It will be crucial for creating jobs, knowledge and climate change. She also made a reference to the 1990s when many governments were social democratic - that's when we laid the ground for the EU we have today; a union of welfare states, employment and dynamic knowledge based economies. Mona Sahlin also discussed the new treaty which brings many advantages. It strengthen the role of politics in important areas such climate change, equality, it makes EU more open, it makes it possible for EU to enlarge etc. Finally she also emphasized the importance of the electoral participation in the upcoming European elections, and added that how we use EU is crucial for how we manage to meet our future challenges, but the basis for that is that we win the elections.

Read the speech in Swedish here.

Margot Wallström talked about the Lisbon treaty and emphasized three important arguments for the treaty. It strengthens the social dimension of the EU, it makes EU more democratic and it makes EU more efficient. It is important that we ratify the treaty as soon as possible, so that we can concentrate more on the political content and results. The treaty gives the EU better possibilities to meet our common challenges. Some of the most urgent are globalization and sustainable development. The treaty doesn't give the answers to those questions, but with the treaty we have created better conditions for politics to meet and influence those challenges.

Read the speech in Swedish here.

Read more about the event on the website of the Swedish Social Democratic Party.

Martin Sandgren, Deputy International Secretary, the Social Democratic Party of Sweden
