In the last time I have participated in some interesting left
civil society and social democrat debates, under the PES
Activists auspices at Oradea and Cluj-Napoca in Romania. The
quality of the subjects and on the other hand of the speakers and
listeners prove again that “the left” has a very good future in
Romania and probably in Europe.
1. The Oradea debate subject:
”Parliamentary bureau - The feed-back connection with
citizens”

Thanks to Jon Worth for his proposals to how Europe’s socialist
and social democratic parties can campaign together in the 2009
elections.Published Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 09:25

It’s been
100 years since the women of the New York textile factory went on
strike to demand better working conditions and the right to vote.
A whole century had passed since that event. Today we live in a
world where nobody is surprised to see women on the elections
lists. But when news came out that a 25-year-old woman saved an
airplane at the Hamburg airport during the Emma hurricane, there
was disagreement as to what consisted bigger news – that she was
young or that she was a woman? The interviews with famous women –
politicians, chairpersons, directors – often include a question:
how do you manage to reconcile your work with the role of the
mother and wife. Does one ask a man how he reconciles his
professional and family functions?
Today women have a right to vote (although still not everywhere
in the world), study, work in different professions because many
decades ago the most courageous of them challenged the status
quo. Of course they suffered from contempt but today their rights
are an obvious thing.
We, European Socialists, have to fight against further
stereotypes in the perception of women and fight for changes not
only in the law but also in people’s minds. We must do that to
create tools to help women... » read more

I would really take
this point about decent conditions for migration and integration of
migrants as one of the most important ones for the
future work of the PES. With the Lisbon Treaty, European
cooperation on migration will be reinforced and at the next meeting
of the PES Presidency we will have a debate on
migration and integration.Tags: decent work, immigration, PES, president

How can we spark a
greater interest in EU politics? Lolomodrego asked this question some time ago and it
is a good one.Published Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at 14:21

As part of our Human Rights the last vestiges of discrimination must be banned. Each individual must be judged on Merit.
In Britain this would include Working Men's Clubs, Freemasons, the Labour Party's All Women Selection and some areas of sport.

With the introduction of so many digital TV channels it would be practical for the EU to have at least one digital TV channel showing the European Parliament in work. It would also make sense to have other digital channels for the various European committees and even the Council of Ministers.
It would certainly help a lot of average Europeans find out how the EU really works rather than hearing the lies spread by the Europhobic isolationists.

The first months of debating European democracy and diversity
have really brought up a lot of priorities and proposals for the
PES to consider:
Fighting discrimination
First of all, fighting discrimination is a very important topic,
including the promotion of minority, women and LGBT rights and of
equal opportunities for all, and the fight against fascism,
racism, anti-Semitism and islamophobia. Regulations already exist at the EU
and national levels, but Rainbow Rose points out the need to enforce these
regulations. The example of the Spanish socialist party, PSOE, was
put forward as a best practice to be followed by PES member
parties on gender issues – the PES itself is already committed to
40 percent... » read more

Although everyone talks about increasing the ethnic involvement but no one has done a consultation within the ethnic community. Being from the ethnic background I know people feel that it is no point coming forward because sometimes they are not made to feel that it is easy to get involved. I think you need an employed ambassador at grass root level who would promote Europe and the benefits in ethnic minority. What you don't need is another high directorate position to write the policy on how to involve the ethnic people. They are the best people to tell you. If someone needs any help I can help. I am involved in politics but I know the reasons why people keep out of politics and I know how to motivate my kind. One has to be able to speak and say the things they want to hear for their benefit. Not lie to them but to really make them see the benefits in their environment.

At long
last, France has joined the group of sensible nations to have
ratified the Lisbon treaty!
This time though, it chose not to risk asking the French people
either through a vote or a referendum. Thus President Sarkozy
kept his electoral promise of choosing to go the parliamentary
way. And as if nothing had changed since the French rejection of
the constitutional treaty in 2005, all the 'narrow-minded
Frenchies' of back then rose up in arms more or less exactly as
last time. The campaign for the French presidential elections and
the 'forced' bipartisanship of that particular moment in time had
silenced them for a while.
The Socialist Party lost itself in its own contradictions,
thereby illustrating the old saying that if there is no solution,
then maybe there is no problem. This may account for the rebirth
of a true political centre in France. The Left has at least
remained united on one thing: it called for a new referendum,
some of its members so that they can relive the great feeling of
having said yes the first time, the others, of having said no, I
guess, but beyond that all Socialists have remained good friends
and comrades.
The tricky thing about this whole story is that those in
favour... » read more

Among this morning’s
activities at the Danish PES manifesto conference was a workshop about
campaigns and cooperation in Europe – the participants discussed
how Europe’s social democrats can work together on common
campaign initiatives in the next European elections. There were
plenty of ideas – to mention a few:
